The latest addition to the SMART family is the beta version of SMART Response VE which uses students Internet enabled phones and devices such as the iTouch.

The system is designed to show questions on the screen and have each individual student respond.The Senteo/SMART response system like their cousins "Clickers" provide every student with an opportunity to respond thus using Active Learning. "Clickers can provide added value, however, when compared to some active learning methods such as class discussion. In a normal class discussion situation, only one or two students have the opportunity to answer a question. Even if the answer is correct, the instructor has no way to gauge if the other students knew the correct answer. A student who is unsure of the correct answer may be unwilling to take the public risk of being incorrect. One of the best features of an SRS is that it allows students to provide input without fear of public humiliation and without having to worry about more vocal students dominating the discussion. Even in small-enrollment classes, many students are reluctant to respond to faculty questions; the anonymity of responding with a clicker guarantees near or total participation." (Martyn, 2007)


Questions can come from an online question bank (SMART Exchange) or you can create them yourself using the SMART Notebook software that is included. The system then records each individual response and score. Using the remotes the students either respond anonymously or by logging in the actual student response can be recorded. This data can then be views by the individual, group, or entire class.

When analyzing the data, SMART Notebook will track and graph scores for you. You can also tag questions with key words to track specific concepts across a broader range of questions.

Because the system uses immediate response and results, the information can be used to change instruction today; not tomorrow, not next week, but today, right now. If the students don’t understand a concept, for example chord progressions, you can cover that topic right now. You can create different questions right then to isolate the need and then address the learning in real time. Individual students can be tracked so that you can adjust the learning of the individual student, not just the entire class. Based on the information given you can prescribe a specific learning plan so that the student knows what they need to learn and doesn’t waste time looking at what they already now.
